Used Solar Panels
If you have electrical equipment which does not have access to the grid or are in search of cheaper energy alternatives, opt for used solar panels. Even if solar panels are slightly damaged, they might not be feasible to be used in the wild, but they can be used at almost full efficiency on cozy and flat rooftops easily.
Those used solar panels have to go somewhere and since they can be expensive to dispose of they typically end up in the used market. In fact, some companies might even give them to you for free if you are lucky enough. This is understandable since most damaged panels do not remain as efficient at storing energy compared to when they were undamaged.
However, even though it might not generate as much energy as a brand new panel, the used system can still power a home sufficiently well. In other words, even if you deduct 10% off a panel that gives 22 watts, you still get up to 19 watts and your electricity bill will still lower.
Used solar panels that are broken can easily be repaired and installed and still work like new. If the ones you find are damaged beyond repair then it might be a good idea to invest in new ones or look elsewhere. You will only waste your money anyway.
With a little research you can find the type and make you are looking for. For instance, if you find some that are at least 2 decades old, keep in mind they will only give you 5 more years of service before they need to be replaced. Typically solar panels can last for 25 years at most if they are brand new. Used ones will last less than that realistically speaking.
Of course, this will depend on how well the used solar panels were taken care of by their previous owner. If they were maintained on a regular basis by professional solar installers, then they will last for quite a few years more for you as well.
You can also opt for surplus panels from a trader or seller who deals in them. There are basically leftovers from older solar panel models that come directly from the manufacturer. In other words, you can rest assured that these panels have never been used and are completely brand new. They are sold for cheaper rates because of this reason and can last as long as a complete set.
A number of manufacturers also sell the refurbished variety which you can buy cheap. Even though they might not be brand new, they are repaired by the manufacturer himself so they are almost as good as new. Yes they might cost a bit more than used solar panels, but they will be free of damages which can decrease their efficiency or energy out.
In the end whether you go for used solar panels or refurbished ones or new ones, your decision will hinge on your budget and how much energy your home needs. Buying used solar panels can be a smart decision if your energy bill skyrocketed so much in the past months that you are having trouble making ends meet and need solutions to get out of your financial funk. The best part is that if you manage to get good ones, they might generate excess energy which can be fed back into the grid and which your utility company will pay you for in appreciation. However, before making the decision, it would be best to ask them if that option is open for you.
