Solar Street Light Controller

Solar Street Light Controller

A solar street light controller is a device which is used to carry out automated functions regarding the running of a solar street light. These functions are generally the on\off function, battery heat up, optimal charging conditions and damage to the wiring.

There are three main types of Controllers which are listed below and any one of them can be used in a street light although the choice depends on the location and climate:-

1. The basic design is the cheapest and simplest and all it does is monitor the battery so that it does not get overcharged. In solar energy systems the overcharging of a battery can be an electric hazard especially in hot countries. Reverse current is also stopped which again can prevent electrical problems with the street light.

2. Next we have the PWM which can go as far as to control the current which is being generated. This not only keeps the battery from overcharging but can create a slower form of charge which can actually last longer sometimes up to three days. PWM controller street lights can last more than two days even if they do not receive sunlight due to thunderstorms or rainy days.

3. Last but not least there is the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracker) street light controller which can maximize the power that is generated by the solar panel. At the same time it keeps the battery from heating up and keeps it at an optimal level of stagnant charge.

Why MPPT Is The Most Efficient Controller

If one can look past the installation costs, investing in a MPPT can cut operational and maintenance expenditure for each street light. MPPT stands for maximum peak power tracking and while it increases the energy the panel is generating it also stores it better letting out a little at a time so that the street light can stay on virtually for as long as it needs to. It is more efficient that your standard controller as it can regulate current and control the way it is stored in the battery.

Benefits Of The Street Light Controller

• It eliminates the need for manpower and hence aids in cutting costs.
• It is automatic which makes the solar street light an independent entity which is providing free energy.
• It can help the entire system to last longer with sensible management of voltage which can be costly if left to a specialist to handle manually.

The Longevity Of A Controller

Contrary to popular belief the solar street light controller actually does not last as long as the entire system including the solar panel does. Whilst it carries out various functions automatically it still needs to be looked into every now and then to check for damage. The estimated time for a controller to last is around ten years while the whole solar street light panel can last for up to 30 years if it is cleaned regularly to get rid of residue and taken care of.
